Local officials offer water safety tips

July 11--As the days get warmer, the draw to rivers and lakes increases. Although fun, local officials say it can be dangerous.
Since 2005, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates an average of ten deaths per day have been at the hands of water-related unintentional drowning incidents.

Department: -- Check current weather and river conditions before you go. -- Do not go into rivers or streams that are running high or flooding, as they can be dangerous. -- Although it is hot outside, water temperatures can be cold, under 70 degrees. Hypothermia can occur at 70 degrees. Watch for signs of hypothermia or avoid the water when water temperatures are this cool. -- Tell someone where you are going and when you expect to return. -- Use the buddy system. Do not tube alone. -- Use caution: Rocks in streams and rivers are slick and you can easily fall. Do not jump from rocks, embankments or bridges. Water depth can be deceiving. -- Know how to swim. -- Wear a life vest. No matter how good of a swimmer you are, the current can move swiftly. -- Always be in your tube feet first to prevent hitting your head and causing serious head injury. -- Wear shoes with traction like aqua shoe or sneakers. Do not wear flip-flops. -- Wear sunscreen, hat, and stay hydrated. -- Do not drink alcohol while on the river. Not only does it increase your chances of drowning or falling, it also dehydrates your body and quickens hypothermia. -- Always follow all posted laws and rules.
