Most New Yorkers approve of Cuomo handling of COVID amid nursing home controversy: Siena
The New York Daily News - 2/16/2021
ALBANY — Most New Yorkers approve of the job the governor is doing to address the COVID crisis, according to a new poll from Siena College.
The survey, conducted earlier this month and released Tuesday, found that 61% of voters give the governor high marks for his management of the pandemic, down slightly from 63% in a previous poll.
However, Cuomo received mixed reviews when New Yorkers were asked about specific subjects, with 67% giving him positive grades for communicating, only 48% think he’s doing a good job with vaccine rollout and 39% think he’s not done a good job with making public all data about COVID deaths of nursing home patients.
“Voters — especially Democrats — continue to give Cuomo strong marks for his overall handling of the pandemic,” Siena College pollster Steven Greenberg said. “While Democrats are positive about Cuomo’s handling of the vaccine rollout and his plans to reopen New York, Republicans are overwhelmingly negative, and independents are negative as well.”
Still, the governor’s favorability rating remained at 56%, with 39% of respondents holding an unfavorable view of Cuomo, the Siena poll found.
Cuomo has faced mounting criticism in recent weeks over the state’s handling of nursing homes during the pandemic and decisions to withhold data from the public.
Last month, Attorney General Letitia James issued a blistering report that accused the Cuomo administration of under-reporting nursing home deaths by as much 50%.
That prompted health officials to finally release a tally that included seniors who died after being transferred to hospitals. In all, more than 15,000 residents of eldercare and long-term facilities have died of coronavirus since last March.
On Monday, Cuomo acknowledged he and his administration made a “mistake” in not releasing accurate information sooner, saying it left a “void” that was filled by misinformation.
